Services

Proofreading
Level I    This is the most basic service offered. It could be the final read of content before it’s published or printed, or it could be a first read of a manuscript. In either case, the material will be read for glaring errors—misspellings, improper capitalizations, extra or missing word spaces, misplaced punctuation marks, subject-verb disagreements, inappropriate indents—and marked for correction. If you are already satisfied with the quality of your content, I recommend Level I Proofreading as a final check of your project.

Level II    This is an upgrade of Level I and takes a bit longer to complete. In addition to the language and formatting elements mentioned for Level I, this level includes the following:
• Checking for spelling and capitalization consistency throughout the material
• Checking the accuracy of Table of Contents, endnotes, graphics, and index through cross-referencing
• Following the style guide and dictionary of your choice for punctuation and hyphenation
(If no preference is indicated, the Chicago Manual of Style (16th Edition) and Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary will be used.)
• Providing suggestions for improved word choice or sentence construction

Line Editing
This is a more in-depth read of the content than Proofreading. It includes Proofreading Level II elements, plus:
• Rewording for clarity, usage, and improved sentence or paragraph construction
• Revising any deviations from style guide
• Querying gaps in information, questionable statements, and inconsistent uses of tone or voice
Note: It’s better to complete the Line Editing before submitting your copy to a designer, though it can also be done after the designer lays it out.

Substantive Editing
At this level, revisions and corrections are made not only to the mechanics of the content, but also to its overall structure, continuity, and tone.
